Dr Susan Walker
Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr Walker graduated from St George’s Medical School in 2007 with a distinction in clinical sciences and a passion for psychiatry. She chose to specialise in child and adolescent psychiatry because she realised that the ability to provide the right diagnosis, care and support to a young person and their family can be life-changing.
She believes in the importance of research in ensuring continuous improvements to healthcare. She has been awarded a prestigious fellowship to undertake a PhD in child and adolescent mental health at University College Hospital, alongside her clinical work at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Her main area of expertise is the assessment of autism spectrum disorder, but she is also experienced in the assessment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, tics, anxiety, depression and medically unexplained symptoms. Following the initial in-depth assessment she will work with the young person and their family to agree a plan. Sometimes confirming a diagnosis may require further specific information; for example from the young person’s school. Once a diagnosis has been made, recommended evidence-based treatments may involve talking therapies, like CBT (for which she would refer to a local psychologist specialising in child and adolescent mental health) or in some cases, medication may be helpful.
Dr Walker is frustrated at the stigma that still surrounds mental health and understands that young people and their family/carers might find it difficult to come to see a mental health professional. She is working hard in her research and clinical work to reduce stigma and promote the importance of acknowledging and seeking help for mental health problems as and when they arise. Research shows that addressing mental health problems early can make an enormous difference to long-term outcomes.
Her favourite things to do when she is not working are spending time with her young daughter, preferably in the outdoors, or staying indoors with a novel.
