Dr Susan Walker
Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr Walker is an Honorary Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Her main area of expertise is the assessment of autism spectrum disorder, but she is also experienced in the assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tics, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and medically unexplained symptoms.
She believes in the importance of research in ensuring continuous improvements to healthcare. She currently holds a prestigious research fellowship and is completing a PhD in child and adolescent mental health at University College Hospital, alongside her clinical work.
Following an initial in-depth assessment, Dr Walker works with the young person and their family to agree a treatment plan. Once a diagnosis/formulation has been made, recommended evidence-based treatments may include talking therapies (for which she may refer to a child and adolescent psychologist), and sometimes medication can also be helpful.
Dr Walker is frustrated at the stigma that still surrounds mental health and understands that young people and their family/carers might find it difficult to call upon a mental health professional. She is working hard in her research and clinical practice to promote the importance of acknowledging and seeking help for mental health problems when they arise. Research shows that addressing mental health problems early can make an enormous difference to long-term outcomes.
Dr Walker is also a parent and understands the many joys and challenges that parenting can present.
