Dr Joanne Spoors

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Spoors studied medicine at Guys and St Thomas’ medical school, qualifying in 2001. She completed the first stage of her psychiatric training at Guys, Kings and St Thomas’, becoming a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2007. Dr Spoors then worked at The Maudsley Hospital and the Winchester Mother and Baby Psychiatric Unit before completing her general adult psychiatric training in the North East of England and Hampshire.

Dr Spoors specialises in perinatal psychiatry, with over ten year’s experience in both inpatient and outpatient perinatal psychiatry care. Dr Spoors offers consultations for patients and their families who are planning pregnancy, pregnant or who have a baby. She offers evidence-based care and a collaborative assessment process working toward an agreed treatment plan. Dr Spoors also offers mental health birth planning for those with mental health diagnoses or previous birth trauma.

Dr Joanne Spoors has been the Clinical Lead of the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust Perinatal Service since 2018. She is the lead Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist with the Hampshire, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and Farnham Community Perinatal Mental Health Team. She also works for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Maternal Mental Health Service, a specialist birth trauma team.

Dr Spoors is a Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) practitioner and an Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. Dr Spoors has a special interest in women’s mental health, in particular the role of hormones in PMDD and mood disorders.
